The Nigerian government has warned Western countries not to discriminate against South Africa following travel restrictions imposed on Southern African countries in the aftermath of the discovery of a new Covid-19 variant, Omicron.

The federal government said President Muhammadu Buhari would go ahead to receive South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, who had been scheduled to visit Nigeria today with other top officials of his administration, on a three-day visit.

In like manner, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has voiced displeasure at the stigmatization and penalization of Africa for the new COVID-19 variant discovered on the continent. He called on African scientists to accelerate the production of a vaccine.

The first case of Omicron was reported in South Africa on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, and since then, the strain has become a matter of global concern.

According to preliminary information from experts, the Omicron has a large number of mutations compared to other variants, and those who had previously contracted COVID-19 are more susceptible to reinfection.
