Gambia’s Presidential election has been concluded with Adama Barrow, comfortably winning a second term and thousands of his supporters celebrating in the streets of Banjul.
The Election which took place on Saturday, December 4, 2021, with results released on Sunday, December 5, 2021, by the Electoral Commission Chairman, Alieu Njai, declared Barrow as the victor, garnering over 53 percent of the vote.
His main opponent, Ousainou Darboe, who won 27.7 percent of the votes, however, disputed the results.
Addressing his supporters, Barrow called on them to respect those who voted for his opponents in a “free, fair and transparent election”.
“I will do all I can and utilize every resource at my disposal to make The Gambia a better place for us all,” he said.
Barrow’s assumption of the presidency five years ago ended more than 20 years of dictatorship.
Saturday’s election, the first since former dictator, Yahya Jammeh, fled into exile, is seen as crucial for the young West African democracy.
