Shonekan who served as Nigeria’s Interim Head of State from 26 August 1993 to 17 November 1993, began his role after President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida resigned as Head of State following the events of the June 12 elections.

In 1994, he founded the Nigerian Economic Summit Group an advocacy group and think-tank for private sector-led development of the Nigerian economy, after his removal from power through a palace coup that was led by late General Sani Abacha.

Since then, Shonekan went on to feature prominently as an elder statesman.

At the time of his death, he was the third oldest surviving Nigerian Head of State after Queen Elizabeth II and General Yakubu Gowon.
