Imo state government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the welfare of workers towards boosting productivity, as it falls in line with the core reason behind the creation of the new Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity.
State Commissioner for Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Ford Ozumba, who gave this assurance while in a meeting with the state leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Owerri, said that his appointment was borne out of the state governor’s desire to ensure welfare of workers and boost productivity hence urging them do focus more on constructive engagements and less of confrontation.
He also called on labour leaders in the state to put on their creative thinking cap and promised to involve representatives of labour unions in formation of committees towards ensuring a better deal for the workers.
State Chairman of TUC, Nkim Tangban, had earlier in his address appreciated the state government for creating the ministry in a bid to attend to the welfare challenges of state workers, whom he described as the engine room of governance.
He however stated that discussion on implementation of minimum wage and consequential adjustments have been at slow pace and called for urgent and adequate attention to the issues.
Governor Hope Uzodimma had on December 22, 2021 sworn in newly appointed commissioners with Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity as a new creation in the state.
