The Association of Tanker Drivers staged a protest action, yesterday, at the Control Junction, in Owerri, over alleged incessant harassment of their union members by some taskforce team.
The tanker drivers, led by their executives, under the aegis of the Freight Forwardees Transport Association, stalled movement around the usually busy roundabout and major entrance into the town, by blocking the road with their trucks.
This left several travellers in transit from Onitsha, Port Harcourt and more, stranded for over 5 hours.
In narrating the reason behind the protest to TOAST FM correspondents, one of the tanker drivers named Sunday said some taskforce team members, had harassed a fellow driver of the union at about 6 am, claiming he was not supposed to be plying the road at the said time, being a tanker.
As solidarity move, other drivers protested, alleging the driver had been beaten up and injured, and his tanker seized by the taskforce team.
Chairman of the Owerri Capital Development Authority, OCDA, Francis Chukwu, alongside other government appointees, however, intervened later on to resolve the issue between both camps, and initiate for a call off of the protest.
After the intervention, the executives of the association assembly their members and called off the protest.
